Cubans living abroad will be able to keep their expired passport “until further notice.” The Director of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad, Ernesto Soberón, ad the extension of the measure that allows “uninterrupted stay abroad, beyond 24 months, without implying the loss of resident status”.
The decision was adopted in October 2020, during the covid-19 pandemic, so that Cubans who had not been able to return to the island due to border closures and flight cancellations would not see their citizenship affected.
The Cuban passport is one of the most expensive in Latin America, and is only valid for six years
The 2013 immigration reform, one of the main measures approved by the government of Raúl Castro since he came to power in 2008, extended the time a Cuban can stay abroad without losing residence in the country, which went from 11 to 24 months, while the time allowed for Cuban emigrants to visit the Island grew from 60 to 90 days.
The Cuban passport is one of the most expensive in Latin America, and is only valid for six years, and must be extended every two. Currently, the cost of a Cuban passport for residents on the island is 100 dollars, about 2,500 pesos, and the extension has a price of 25 dollars, more than 600 pesos approximately.
However, the price of the passport for those who live abroad changes, Cubans who live in the United States have to pay 400 dollars for the travel document and 180 to extend it.
