MIAMI, United States. — Cuba will receive more than 120,000 Mexican tourists so far this year. This was assured to the newspaper the day Sonia Beltrán, tourist adviser of the Cuban embassy in the Aztec country.

The official maintained that the reopening of borders and the elimination of the sanitary requirements imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic will allow the Caribbean island to receive more Mexican tourists than in previous years.

“Tourism has already partially recovered in Cuba since the opening of the borders in November of last year and the prospects are good,” Beltrán told the day.

As of April 17, of the 399,077 international tourists who had arrived in Cuba in 2022, 4,979 were Mexicans, a figure much higher than the 441 who had visited the island in the same period last year.

Of the total number of foreign visitors received by Cuba in the last four months, 362,006 came from the 20 main source markets. In that list, Mexico is ranked 11th, below nations such as Canada, the United States, Russia, and Germany.

Sonia Beltrán recalled that Mexico is the main issuing market for Cuban tourism in Latin America, above Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela.

“It is important to say that Mexico rose one position in the position with respect to the 20 main issuing markets to Cuba,” the official told La Jornada.

Currently, Cuba receives 41 weekly flights from Mexico, specifically from the capital city, Cancún, Mérida and Monterrey.

Although at the moment only Viva Aerobús and Magnicharters airlines travel to the Caribbean island, by December of this year Aeroméxico could join in operating destinations such as Havana, Varadero, Santa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
