Cuba exchanges experiences with Belgium and the EU on legal issues

In dialogue with Prensa Latina, Díaz described the visit as beneficial, based on the various meetings held, the issues discussed and the foundations laid for future meetings and cooperation possibilities.

During the last two days we had the opportunity to talk with representatives of both European and Belgian institutions, about the actions to improve the work of our Ministry, the progress of the legislative schedule and the reality of the country, commented the official, who was accompanied by the Director of International Relations Israel Ybarra.

According to the deputy minister, the stay in this capital, which gave continuity to a work program on European soil, was also conducive to exposing the complex scenario in which the island is developing, marked by the impact of the economic, commercial and imposed by the United States for more than 60 years.

The ongoing debates on the new Family Code, the updating of criminal regulations, the computerization of society, the successes in confronting Covid-19 and the processes that take place as a result of the events of July 11 , also stood out in the exchanges of criteria.

Díaz explained to his interlocutors that those prosecuted for last summer’s riots in Cuban cities are people suspected of committing crimes, and not for political reasons, as the media ill-intentionally reflects.

There is no one tried for demonstrating peacefully against things with which they do not agree, and the processes were carried out with all the guarantees, a reality that we clarified, he insisted.

The Cuban official spoke here with Mathilde Steenbergen, director of Justice in the Strategic Cell of the Belgian Federal Public Service of Justice, a meeting that represented an initial rapprochement meeting, which left the door open for eventual cooperation in matters of training and legislation, among other.

He also spoke with the head of the Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean Division of the European External Action Service, Jonathan Hatwell, and with the director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Central Directorate of International Associations of the European Commission, Jolita Butkeviciene .

In the sphere of the European Parliament, he met with Tilly Metz, president of the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Central America, and with members of the Group of Friendship and Solidarity with Cuba.

The delegation, which arrived in Brussels from Vienna and will continue its agenda this Wednesday in Rome, held a pleasant meeting with the group of the island’s diplomatic mission in Belgium, headed by Ambassador Yaira Jiménez, during which they addressed the confrontation with the pandemic and the debates around the new Family Code.
