United Nations, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Practically 80 percent of the historical debt that the UN has today in its regular budget is attributable to defaults by the United States, one of the world economic powers, denounced Cuba.

This was expressed by the alternate permanent representative of the island to the United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso, who qualified that fact as inadmissible and ethically reprehensible.

This multilateral body is the most useful tool to work together in order to achieve a better and more sustainable future, the ambassador stressed the day before in the debate on improving the financial situation of the UN.

However, he added, we note with concern how the lack of financial resources that the United Nations has taken in recent years seriously compromises the cardinal functions that it must fulfill. It is not morally justifiable that the United States, the country with the largest contribution due to its excess capacity to pay, intentionally decides to withhold its contributions to this organization, the Cuban diplomat stressed.

He pointed out that this situation is nothing more than a kind of financial pressure and a boycott against the multilateral organization.

Pedroso also highlighted how Cuba has fully complied with all its payments, making colossal efforts and sacrifices, despite having to deal with a tense economic scenario this year, mainly associated with Covid-19 and the immovable economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed. for the United States.

That North American siege does not loosen an inch before the humanitarian implications of this pandemic, he emphasized.

Washington tightened the blockade in an opportunistic and unprecedented way in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the Government of Havana repeatedly denounced.

Under Donald Trump (2017-2021), the White House launched more than 240 unilateral coercive measures and sanctions against Cuba. To date, Joe Biden’s administration has applied the same policy in its entirety.
