After recalling that the Canadian authorities have condemned the violation of human rights by the Cuban regime after the demonstrations of July 11 (July 11), and especially the statements where Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated that “Cubans they have the right to express themselves and have their voices heard”, Cuba Decide and Democratic Spaces asked that Canada now “accompany their words with deeds”.
Through a joint statement, these organizations also highlighted that the United States has used its Magnitsky legislation to impose a series of selective sanctions on Cuban officials and entities responsible for human rights violations after the protests of 11J.
“To reinforce the need for coordinated action among democratic nations, Canada should do the same and impose targeted sanctions,” the document highlights.
Regarding the wave of repression and imprisonment after 9/11, Cuba Decide and Democratic Spaces state that “Cuban state officials committed so many arbitrary detentions after the protests that Cuba is now the main jailer of political prisoners in the Americas.”
Just as they denounce that the officials of all branches of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior enjoy impunity in the commission of serious violations of human rights in the country.
Given this impunity, the statement concluded, “it is crucial that Canada do its part so that those responsible for serious human rights violations against the Cuban people are held accountable.”
