Cuba continues in the dark after almost 20 hours of national blackout

Havana/ Madrid/Most of Cuba continues this morning without light, almost 22 hours after the disconnection of the National Electrical System (SEN), which occurred yesterday Wednesday at 9:14 am by the untimely departure of the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant. Although circuits with essential services have been recovered little by little, the population continues, generalized, without receiving light.

So far, Unit 8 of the Máximo Gómez, Mariel thermoelectric plant; 1 and 3 of the Ernesto Guevara, in Santa Cruz del Norte, the 5 of Nuevitas and the 3 of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Cienfuegos. As for the energy plants, managed with the support of the Canadian Sherritt, the mouth of Jaruco is also linked to unit 8 of the Mariel CTE, as well as that of Varadero with the Cienfuegos central. At 6:00 am on Thursday, according to the last reports, the entire country had microsystems with a coverage level of 1,000 MW, and two large islands: one from Mariel to Matanzas and another from Matanzas to Camagüey.

All this has allowed the capital to be at the head of recovery. According to the authorities, at the last minute of the night there were 64 circuits on, for a total of 193,496 clients, which represents only 22.5% of the city. In addition, there were 33 health centers with light and an essential pumping plant. Thus, Havana is among the few provinces that have planned to keep classes this Thursday. Although it will be necessary to see in how many centers it is possible, since it will only be “those cases where there are the necessary conditions.”

Yes, they canceled classes at the Technological University of Havana, José Antonio Echeverría (Cujae), who asked to be attentive to subsequent evolution. “Tomorrow, Thursday, you will be informed about the situation for Friday.”

On the other hand, the Guantanamo educational centers, one of the provinces that achieved the best progress in reconnection through microsystems will open. The authorities soon warned that, thanks to these advances, “most municipalities are today with electricity according to the planned rotation”, which does not imply great joys in a region accustomed to spending more than 15 hours without light. There were at least three great hospitals with normal functioning, Octavio de la Concepción, in Baracoa; and the Dr. Agustino Neto and the Pediatric Gutiérrez Teaching Hospital Pedro Gutiérrez, in the city header.

Granma also managed to lift a microsystem to give light to the Bayamo and Manzanillo hospitals. In this province, solar energy was used for the first time to reconnect a minimum service. “We have a hybrid microsystem with a level of photovoltaic solar generation,” said Lázaro Guerra, director of the Electric Union (UNE), which clarified, however, that although this energy “is not at its maximum capacity to guarantee the stability of the microsystem, it has been possible to integrate it effectively.”

In Villa Clara, the progress was also relatively efficient for the seriousness of the situation, since the central province did not have its main engine, the Hanabanilla hydroelectric plant, in Manicaragua. This type of energy is one of the most powerful when starting a system, but the plant has been stopped for days for a “inappropriate” repair, although much of the year has been out of service due to lack of water. The territory, however, had light in all hospitals and vital circuits before noon and maintained the intention of opening the educational centers if the circumstances were favorable.

In Camagüey, on the other hand, modifications have been announced in this regard. The University modified the schedules to close at the end of the second turn (11:15) and will not resume again until Monday, September 15. For the institution’s workers, the working day on Thursday and Friday will end at 1, while the Student Residence has guaranteed all services so that students can remain without returning to their homes.

Different units “guarantee the released bread and, as usual before energy contingencies, support the production of regulated bread to the population”

Another of the entities that has had to warn that its services continue is the Cuban company of the PAN, which assured that its different units “guarantee the released bread and, as usual before energy contingencies, support the production of the regulated bread to the population.”

In an interview with Channel Caribe, the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Carilda Peña García, opted for optimism by ensuring that there was no worrying contingency, since the structure groups of the hospitals worked, as well as the coverage of oxygen and nitrogen, the latter being the one that most attentive maintained the authorities, since at some points – not specified – their coverage was less than 24 hours.

The Vice Minister acknowledged that access to water was the biggest challenge, because the drought was already putting a good part of the country in check. Peña García insisted that surgeries were carried out without setbacks and that in the polyclinics without structure the vital services were prioritized with the available medical staff.

The objective, at that time, was to transfer the patients with urgent treatments to the centers with better possibilities, a challenge in the middle of a depleted ambulance park. In addition, he thanked those who had non -urgent surgical procedures their understanding of the reprogramming that has been made.
