Cuba celebrates 34th anniversary of victory in Cuito Cuanavale

Cuba today commemorates the 34th anniversary of the victory in the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, in Angola, with which combatants from both countries reaffirmed the sovereignty of that African nation.

In its Twitter profile, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the event as a heroic and transcendent page that made possible the liberation of Angola, the independence of Namibia and marked the way for the definitive defeat of Apartheid in South Africa.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry also highlighted the celebration on the date of the Liberation Day of Southern Africa, by agreement of the Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), adopted in August of 2018.

He pointed out that such a decision represents the SADC’s recognition of those who fell in the just struggle against colonialism and racial discrimination and the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, a beacon of internationalism of the Cuban Revolution.

Taking place from November 15, 1987 to March 23, 1988, the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale was the largest and longest military conflict in Angola and Africa, in general, after World War II.

The victory against the South African invaders and the soldiers of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita), forced the Pretoria regime to withdraw from that country and start peace talks, and opened the way for the process of dismantling Apartheid .
