Cuba celebrated about a thousand same -sex marriages in 2024

Cuba closed last year with 955 same sex marriageswhile the divorces between these couples added 102, according to official data.

The figures were confirmed in the last hours by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), after pointing out that of the total of these unions, 481 were between men and 474 among women.

Havana is headed with 285 marriages and Guantanamo with the least number, 22.

As for divorces between same -sex couples, 102 (53 between men and 49 between women were awarded. Havana headed the list with 15 cases, followed by Camagüey and Las Tunas with 13 each, while Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos and Guantanamo recorded only two each.

These figures, published by the ONEI, highlight the consolidation of marriage rights after the approval of the Family Code in 2022, although there were no factors behind regional variations.

He Demographic Yearbook 2024 It indicates that 21 113 total divorces were granted, an increase of 543 compared to 2023 (20 570), but 72 less than in 2022 (21 185).

The island of Youth showed the highest rate (3.6 per thousand inhabitants), followed by Artemis (3.1), while Granma (1.2) and Havana (1.4) had the lowest.

He Family Code, which replaced that of 1975, includes historical demands of the LGBTIQ+ community of Cuba, where until a few decades the homosexuals suffered rejection and discrimination, and even became admitted to military labor fields, the so -called UMAP.

Celebrated in Cuba more than 700 marriages between people of the same sex

Equal marriage was one of the most controversial issues of the code in discussions prior to its ratification at the polls, because it found the criticisms and opposition of the most conservative sectors of Cuban society and also of several Christian churches.

In addition, it places Cuba together with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, and most of the states of Mexico as the ninth Latin American country that has legalized same -sex marriage.
