Cuba asks the US for help after running out of power due to the passage of Hurricane Ian

The Cuban government made an unusual request for emergency aid to the administration of the president of the United States, Joe Bidenafter the hurricane Ian will leave the entire island of 11 million people without electricity, reported Friday the Wall Street Journal.

The hurricane Ian swept across the island on Tuesday, flattening homes and destroying farm fields.

Protests due to lack of service

The slow recovery of electricity service in Cuba maintains social tension in Havana, with street protests in various parts of the capital.

The first secretary of the ruling Communist Party (PCC, unique) in Havana, Luis Antonio Torres, admitted that there have been protests in several municipalities.

“Protesting is a right, but it is a right when those responsible for the State and the government are failing to do what is their responsibility,” said Torres, in statements broadcast on local television.

The protests, “instead of helping, slow down the fulfillment of that mission (…) that we have” of “in the shortest time possible to have a full recovery,” said Torres, alleging that PCC leaders had to come out to explain the situation and stopped fulfilling other tasks.
