The Cuba Archive organization launched this Saturday a petition on the Change.org platform of solidarity with the Island in which they demand justice for the 11J prisoners and freedom for the people.
The initiative is published, by the way, on January 1, the sixty-third anniversary of the Revolution, “the regime that has squandered injustice, repression, misery and despair on the Cuban people,” says the Miami-based NGO in a statement issued this Saturday.
In it, they ask to give away “three minutes”, what it takes to read and sign the petition on Change.org, “for 63 years of dictatorship”, and celebrates that another initiative on the same platform, the one that advocated for the reduction of The conviction of Cuban truck driver Rogel Aguilera, sentenced to 110 years in prison in the United States for an accident in which four people died, has had a huge impact and, finally, the governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, reduce the youth’s sentence to 10 years. “People obviously sympathize with the victims of injustice,” says the organization led by María Werlau.
The text on the platform recalls that before “the largest public anti-government demonstration of the past half century in Cuba,” that of July 11, with thousands of citizens spontaneously asking for freedom and the improvement of their living conditions, the Cuban State responded with “a fierce repression: arbitrary detentions, trials without due process guarantees, labor dismissals, forced exile, persecution and threats of all kinds.”
At the same time, it ponders the work done by the Justice group 11J, which reported “at least” 1,334 detainees on that day, including 45 minors between the ages of 14 and 17 and that 708 people are still incarcerated. “Around 200 have been sentenced to long prison terms, with sentences of up to 20 and 30 years. Hundreds face equally scandalous punishments,” the petition states.
They ask the governments of the world to impose on the island an embargo on arms and “material for repression,” as well as sanctions on Cuban officials, “including prosecutors and judges,” who lend themselves to repress
“The laws of Cuba discriminate politically in open violation of fundamental rights and thousands more are imprisoned for alleged common crimes or State security and for ‘pre-criminal social danger’ in order to maintain socio-political control,” denounces Cuba Archive , who cries out: “It’s time to say enough!”
For this reason, they demand from the Cuban government, to begin with, the unconditional release of all political prisoners and the dismissal “of all judicial and investigative processes for political reasons.” In addition, they request information on those imprisoned “in the context of public demonstrations, for pre-criminal social danger and for all political reasons, as well as access to public records of prisons and courts.”
They also ask that the United Nations rapporteur against Torture and international human rights organizations have access, for inspection, to the island’s detention centers, “selected without prior notice.”
Finally, they demand the “dismantling of the internal repression apparatus”, the “repeal of laws and regulations that penalize the exercise of civil and political rights”, and the “urgent” start of a transition process towards “a multi-party democracy that guarantees the free exercise of the sovereignty of the people under the rule of law. “
On the other hand, they ask the governments of the world to impose on the island an embargo on arms and “material for repression,” as well as sanctions on Cuban officials, “including prosecutors and judges,” who lend themselves to repress, and that cease any action “that legitimizes, finances or helps the dictatorship.”
Finally, they ask the international community to send humanitarian aid to Cuba “without the mediation of the Government until it is the legitimate representative of the people,” and they end the petition by launching the slogan of the protests, taken from the homonymous song: homeland and life.
