Havana and Hanói agreed on Tuesday to expand military and intelligence cooperation within the framework of the visit of the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to Vietnam.
According to the extensive joint declaration On the “strengthening” of bilateral relations and the “integral cooperation” of both country, the links in the field of internal and foreign security are a relevant point in exchanges.
The leaders of Cuba and Vietnam “agreed to continue close cooperation in areas of defense, security and foreign affairs,” and emphasized “the importance and efficacy of the Bilateral Political Consultation Mechanisms.”

He had already referred to these areas Cuban President in his speech in Hanói on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, when he pointed out that cooperation in “defense and security constitutes another expression of mutual trust.”
In recent months several exchanges have taken place in these areas. The ministers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the interior of Cuba, Álvaro López Miera and Luis Alberto Álvarez Casas, visited Vietnam recently.
For his part, the Deputy Minister and Chief of the General Staff of the Popular Army of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Cuong, traveled to Havana last June.
The bilateral statement, which also affects political and economic exchanges, put the final finishing touch on Díaz-Canel visit to Vietnam, the first stop of an Asia tour that continues now in China.

Cuba and Vietnam maintain close political ties and Havana, pressured by a deep crisis, seeks in recent years to put the economic ones at the same height. Recently more than fifty cooperation agreements have been signed in various sectors.
The Asian nation has become the second commercial partner of the Caribbean country and the main capital investor of its region.
