LAS TUNAS, Cuba. — The political obscenity —understand the cynicism— of the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO)has become public and notorious during these days for its disagreement with the United States due to the exclusion of the communist regime in Havana from the Summit of the Americas.
Despising Cubans who suffer persecution and imprisonment for lack of civil liberties and all kinds of miseries, AMLO has adopted the Díaz-Canel regime as a system of “social justice”, ignoring that it is nothing more than the executing instrument of the Castro-communist dictatorship that It has been going on for more than 60 years.
On January 22, 1962, Cuba was separated from the Organization of American States (OAS), a situation that persists today, not because the OAS does not want to integrate Cuba, but because it is the Castro-communist regime that is determined not to join it, but disintegrate the OAS. And AMLO is playing that trick, going not only against the United States embraced by Castro-communism, but also going against a fundamental principle for inter-American unity: respect for democracy.
Today it is useful to ask: if AMLO is so interested in the union of all the peoples of America… Why does he not advocate for the regime in Havana to comply with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by implementing the precepts of the Inter-American Democratic Charter?
The United States has vetoed access to the Summit of the Americas for Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela not only for reasons of principle, but also procedural, constitutional, and legally inescapable compliance: “The Heads of State and Government of the Americas, meeting in the Third Summit of the Americas, held from April 20 to 22, 2001 in Quebec City, adopted a democratic clause that establishes that any unconstitutional alteration or rupture of the democratic order in a State of the Hemisphere constitutes an insurmountable obstacle to the participation of the government of said State in the process of Summits of the Americas”, says the Inter-American Democratic Charter signed at the Twenty-eighth Special Period of Sessions on September 11, 2001, in Lima, Peru.
In Venezuela and Nicaragua there is a lack of democracy because their rulers have broken the constitutional order, not because these countries lack mechanisms to implement a participatory democracy based on the rule of law. But that is not the case in Cuba, governed by a totalitarian regime since 1959, when, with a stroke of the pen, all the legal instruments that validated the electoral processes were eliminated.
Then, if AMLO is a democratically elected president and says he wants democracy not only for the Mexican people, but for all the nations of the Americas… Why does he cynically intend to restrict the civil rights of Cubans by sitting Diaz-Canel, along with women? and men who were elected by their fellow citizens?
If, disrespecting the Inter-American Democratic Charter, AMLO is not going to advocate for freedom, the independence to elect and be elected for all citizens who lack that right, and it does not matter if at the Summit of the Americas or at any other summit, the best What the Tabasqueño can do is keep silent.
