Beijing, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) Due to its status as a tropical country, Cuba does not participate in the Winter Olympics, but it left a mark on the way to Beijing 2022 thanks to initiatives that involved its culture and its children.
Minors from the Antillean country were present in the children’s choir that accompanied the revelation of the pictograms on December 31, 2020.
The presentation of the drawings was part of a television gala offered on New Year’s Eve and they met just as the clock marked the beginning of 2021.
Then on July 20, three young representatives from the island participated in China’s official ceremony to mark 200 days in the countdown to the 24th Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
On that occasion they joined a choir also made up of 300 children from the host country, Colombia, Mexico, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and other nationalities who interpreted the iconic song We are The World in English and Embrace The Future in Mandarin.
Also on January 18 last, infants from Cuba and China came together to pay homage from art and culture to the celebration of Beijing 2022.
It was the exhibition “Joyful encounter on ice and snow”, with 138 drawings made by schoolchildren from both nations that reflected their vision of the games.
The Cuban presence also stands out in the ninth Biennial of Contemporary Art in Beijing with the work Athletics by Alfredo Sosabravo, one of the most important plastic artists of the largest of the Antilles.
It is an acrylic on canvas where an athlete throws a puck while another runs past as an allegory to the so-called “king sport”.
Organizers of all these activities intended to reinforce cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between peoples.
The 24th Winter Games will open tonight and will make Beijing the only city on the planet to host both variants of the event under the five rings, after hosting the 2008 summer version.
Mixed double curling competitions began on Wednesday and the Olympic chapter of the competition will run until February 20 with almost three thousand athletes from 91 delegations.
The Paralympic part of the event will be from March 4 to 13.
