MIAMI, United States – At the 16th BRICS Summit, held in Kazan, Russia, Cuba was announced as one of the 13 new countries that will join the group as associate members, according to official media reports from the island.

In this way, the island joins the alliance of emerging economies alongside Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia did “everything possible” to ensure that the new members could join the BRICS family in an organic way, emphasizing that the group is committed to building a “more democratic and multipolar world order.”

In his speech, Putin stressed that BRICS is “not a closed format” and is open to countries that share its values.

At the beginning of October, it became known that the Cuban regime had officially requested to join the BRICS group. The request was made through a letter addressed to Putin, who holds the temporary presidency of the group in 2024.

The BRICS group, which added South Africa to the founding countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) in 2010, has grown in 2024 under the name BRICS+ with the inclusion of Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The presidency of the group has been held by Russia since January 1 of this year.

The Russian regime has expressed its intention to “strengthen multilateralism for equitable global development and security.” In total, the Russian Federation will organize over 200 political, economic, and social events related to BRICS.
