The Ministry of Public Health has incorporated 241 new cases of covid-19 detected this Tuesday, a qualitative jump from yesterday’s 145. The upward trend is thus confirmed, since after weeks of around 70 infections a day, in recent days it has gone beyond 100 in an upward trend.
This is the fifth day that the 100 has been exceeded, the first to pass 200, a figure that has not been exceeded since December 6.
Although no deceased has been added, there are 11 patients in intensive care, of which three are critical and eight are serious.
One of the Cuban territories where there is currently the greatest concern is Isla de la Juventud, where it is expected that in a single day there will be more than one hundred cases based on current rates.
The transmission was contained “effectively when travelers were quarantined in isolation centers,” a measure that no longer applies today, said Israel Velázquez, municipal director of the Ministry of Public Health in Nueva Gerona.
The official recalled that since December 24 antigen tests have been carried out on those who arrive in the territory by sea or air, but only yesterday the territory reported 98 autochthonous cases under follow-up in the last 15 days, an incidence rate of 117.9 per every 100,000 inhabitants and one of the highest in Cuba.
The increase in covid-19 data coincides with the wave that has hit the world since the omicron variant was detected
The increase in covid-19 data coincides with the wave that has hit the world since the omicron variant was detected. In the United States and Europe, contagion figures never seen before in a pandemic are being produced and, although vaccines have greatly reduced hospitalizations (around 70%), the greatest problems are caused by the large number of people who saturate primary care or the numerous sick leave that prevent the normal functioning of industries and services.
In Cuba, the low figures in recent months, after a hellish summer, have led to the loss of the perception of risk among the population, which already renounces the use of a mask even in the frequent riots that occur in the queues. The high rate of vaccinated on the island also contributes to relaxation in some citizens already tired of the pandemic. However, the enormous number of infections that occur in countries with a high level of immunization give an idea of the speed with which the current wave is spreading.
This Tuesday in Spain, a country with more than 90% of the population vaccinated with any of the solutions approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), registered its record with more than 60,000 official cases.
This Wednesday, the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called for extreme social measures to curb infections after considering the “tsunami of cases” that the omicron boom causes problematic, together with the persistence of the previous delta variant .
The record numbers of infections, which already approach a million cases a day, “will continue to add pressure to health systems on the brink of collapse, with their workers already exhausted,” he said at a press conference.
