The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, generated controversy by stating that Uruguay is a country “without direction” and without “any plan” for the future. These statements prompted the response of the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón, who pointed out that the country does have a “very marked” course.
Cosse also pointed out that the educational reform is being carried out “behind closed doors” and that the country faces a serious institutional image problemin reference to the scandal surrounding the former head of presidential custodians Alejandro Astesiano and the publication of the Financial Times.
“Unfortunately, I see it aimlessly because we don’t know anything about what will happen with the work of the future, there is no plan. The issue of education is done behind closed doors. We have a serious international image problem”, said the head of the capital during the inauguration of the Venetian Luxury Residences project in Punta del Este.
Argimón defended the course of the government of Luis Lacalle Pou and pointed out that they are working on important issues such as energy, telecommunications, the environment and work. These statements generated an intense debate in the country and show the current political and social tensions in Uruguay.
