The ‘Dibu’ Martínez is accumulating detractors every hour that passes and the last to join that list was the legendary Graeme Souness, a former Scottish footballer and coach, who, although he highlighted his work under the sticks, did not like the goal’s subsequent celebration at all.
“Much of the debate after the World Cup final has focused on the behavior of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez during the penalty shootout. I can accept such antics, up to a point. But what we should talk about more is the rude gesture he made after picking up his tournament’s best goalkeeper trophy,” he began by saying in his interview with the Daily Mail, where he was even more forceful.
Souness, indignant, wondered what “Are there really people who are amused by something like that?”to later ensure that “Martínez embarrassed himself and his country. He looked like a vulgar clown. If that’s what he wants to be remembered for, God help us all. I like him as a goalkeeper, in Argentina and at Aston Villa. But for him to think that what he did was not appropriate, that’s unbelievable.”
Souness’s sticks against ‘Dibu’ Martínez ended in style: “I don’t understand why he decided to do that in front of everyone’s eyes. What respect do you show for your hosts? Even by himself? Maybe he doesn’t care. Well he should. He won’t be so proud for years to come. Unfortunately, that image is now part of the history of the final”. / Mundo Deportivo
