He Christ the Redeemer Pass, one of the most important border crossings between Chile and Argentina, will once again be the protagonist of long waits this October 6 due to the increase in vehicle flow and the meteorological complications expected for the weekend.
According to the authorities of the Cristo Redentor Integrated System (SIRC), vehicles heading towards Argentina or Chile will have to face a wait of between 4 and 5 hours to complete customs procedures at the Los Libertadores Complex, something that has already become recurrent since the Argentine devaluation in December.
The main problem is at Chilean customs, where the 14 vehicle control booths are not enough to speed up the process. On the other hand, at the Horcones Complex, located on the Argentine side, the paperwork is faster and does not present the same delays, which has generated a bottleneck on the Chilean side in the Passed.
In addition to customs delays, there is a weather factor that could further complicate the crossing: the snowfall forecast. The Meteored web portal has indicated that from the early hours of Sunday, October 6 until the night of Tuesday, the 8th, snow is expected to fall in the high mountain area. This could cause the temporary closure of the international crossing, which would affect travelers who plan to return to Mendoza after the long weekend.
SIRC authorities have confirmed that this forecast coincides with the warnings of the Valparaíso Meteorological System, in charge of monitoring the Chilean sector of the Andes Mountains. The possibility of the crossing being disabled by snowfall has raised concerns, as many travelers would be stranded if they fail to cross before conditions worsen. It is suggested to those who plan to use the Christ the Redeemer Passstay informed and constantly review weather updates.
