Vice President Cristina Fernández warned this Sunday about the “double standard” of the great powers in international law, referring to the crisis unleashed in Ukraine from Russia’s decision to support two separatist provinces in that country.

Through a series of tweets published “40 years” after the Falklands War and “8 years” after the “conflict between Ukraine and Russia over the Crimean peninsula”, the vice president alluded to the issue.

“In the year 2014, being president of the Nation and Héctor Timerman our chancellor, Argentina was part, as a temporary member, of the UN Security Council. In that year, on March 15, said body discussed a resolution presented by the United States that exhorted the international community not to recognize the result of the referendum for the independence of Crimea, scheduled for Sunday, March 16 of that same year,” recalled Fernández de Kirchner.

The former president stated that “that day, 13 of the 15 member countries of the Security Council, including Argentina, voted in favor of the text presented by the United States that defended the ‘sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity’ of Ukraine.

“In other words,” he said, “Argentina supported Ukraine based on the principle of territorial integrity, a pillar of international law. Russia, one of the five permanent members with the right to veto, exercised this privilege and spoke against it. China abstained” .

For the vice president, “in this episode lie the two main problems that affect global security and peace”, referring, first, to the “double standard of the great powers in matters of international law when making decisions”, which which led her to cite the situation in the Falkland Islands and the support of the United States and the United Kingdom for the 2013 referendum in which the inhabitants of the archipelago voted in favor of remaining under the political control of London.

Secondly, the vice president referred to the “anachronism” of the UN Security Council that “continues, since the Second World War, without modifying the status quo of the victorious countries that granted themselves permanent chairs with the right to veto and the rest of the countries, temporary chairs and testimonial vote.

“Does anyone think that with these privileges and applying international law or not as it suits the powerful countries of the world, we are taking care of global security and world peace?” asked the former president.

And he concluded: “Respect for international law together with the truth and coherence between ideas and actions do not seem to be attributes of global powers. Today, February 27, 2022, I still think the same.”

While, Ukraine and Russia will hold a first meeting this Monday to seek a negotiated solution to the war conflictas reported by the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of the Interior, Evgeny Yenin, in an unspecified place between the border of his country and Belarus.

The office of the President of Ukraine, Volidimir Zelensky, reported that although the proposal that the meeting be held in Belarus, in the city of Gomel, was rejected, it was accepted to move it to a place on the border, which will remain secret.

“The politicians agreed that the Ukrainian delegation will meet the Russian delegation without preconditions at the Ukraine-Belarus border near the Pripyat River,” their office said, the AFP news agency reported.

Zelensky agreed to this negotiating meeting after having a telephone conversation with his Belarusian counterpart, Alexsandr Lukashenko, in which he obtained guarantees that Belarus will not join the invasion launched by Russia in the early hours of last Thursday.
