MIAMI, United States. — Most ATMs in Havana are out of service. This was recognized today by Banco Metropolitano in a note broadcast by local media in the capital.
The information offered by the state banking entity is produced as a result of “the numerous complaints from customers due to the problems generated with the ATM service in the city.”
“The management of Banco Metropolitano informs that a large part of them is out of service due to lack of spare parts and in some it is only possible to carry out electronic operations and balance inquiries,” the statement said.
The entity also explains that “of those that remain active, several of them go out of service on a daily basis, mainly due to breakage of the dispenser module and the keyboard that, thanks to the inventiveness of the entity’s technicians, are returned to their useful life”.
It is estimated that only in Havana do ATMs sell daily more than 160 million pesos. Even, “in recent days the extractions have exceeded 200 million pesos a day.”
According to Banco Metropolitano, due to its intensive use, this equipment “requires replacement due to its technological obsolescence, but so far we do not have an immediate response, given the economic situation facing the country.”
Faced with this scenario, the entity offered the population “alternatives” such as increasing electronic charges for all agents that provide services or sell merchandise; and use the Extra Cash service.
Banco Metropolitano clarified that “ATMs in which it is only possible to carry out electronic operations and balance inquiries must have a sticker that identifies them, otherwise it may be a technical problem.”
