Texcoco, Mex., The Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACH) is in a crisis after its educational activities have been paralyzed since August 31 and around 6,400 (out of 11,000) students in the university assembly last Thursday dismissed the rector, José Solís Ramírez, and appointed Ángel Garduño as substitute.
Given this, Solís Ramírez called for a legal plebiscite with due process, until reaching the decision that the university determines
. Without defining the date, he said that it will be done with enough time to properly inform the community
and added that he will abide by the resulting decision. He also recognized the need to refound the institution.
Since August 31, students began an indefinite work stoppage to demand a 30 percent increase in their scholarships, since the aid granted during the pandemic was withdrawn; the establishment of a new University Council, support for their international studies, and denouncing the deficiencies of the boarding schools, such as the leaking of water into the dormitories and overcrowding in classrooms, among other demands.
Due to the strike, 2,822 teachers and 4,500 base and administrative workers from the Texcoco headquarters and the 12 regional centers stopped working. The rectory responded to part of his petition, such as the 12 percent increase in scholarships. The students did not accept because they claim that there was no substantive solution to their demands.
The students held an assembly on October 6, made up of students, academics and researchers, where they removed the rector Solís Ramírez. On Saturday, the interim rector summoned the University Council to meet and it gave the assembly on Thursday as legal, the appointment of the new rector and the request for an increase in scholarships was answered.
