The cut in the track was at least 40 centimeters, which would have caused the train to derail in the municipality of Cortazar.
In an interview with the media Onlinethe Secretary of the Government of Guanajuato, Jorge Jiménez Lona, reported that the train driver was able to see the damage on the track and reduced the speed, thus avoiding an accident.
“The information we have is indeed that there was an attempt; fortunately it did not work. They cut a part of the rail, approximately 40 centimeters and, thanks to the operator’s expertise, he reduced the speed and managed to pass the train,” said the official.
After the sabotage attempt, elements of the National Guard implemented a surveillance operation on the train tracks.
Jiménes Lona recalled that the security of said infrastructure corresponds to the Federation. However, he said that Guanajuato authorities maintain coordinated work with federal authorities.
The official explained that these actions could be linked to financial blows that have been dealt to criminal organizations in the region.
“What we have seen is that criminal groups in that area have been very strongly affected. More than 3 million liters of hydrocarbons have been seized between the State and the Federation,” he said.
”That is important, the damage that is being caused to their finances, obviously they are looking for ways to get resources. Right now the call is to coordinate, the governor has asked us a lot for that, to work with the Federation, join the National Guard and see how we can join,” he added.
The official also said that they have no complaints about cases in which rails are cut in the state.
“We had no information about events of this nature; what had been detected was that they were putting stones and looking for a way to stop the train,” he added.
A cell of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL) would be responsible for the sabotage of the communication route. Said criminal group operates in the Celaya-Villagrán-Cortazar corridor.
Guanajuato has remained in recent years as one of the most violent entities in the country.
