In light of the operations carried out by the Peruvian National Police (PNP) against the theft of cell phones, it seems that criminal gangs have begun to erase the IMEI numbers of stolen devices and clone them with others that were not reported. An elderly woman was arrested when she tried to send a package to Lima with 21 stolen devices, motherboards for replacement, serial numbers and a device that is used to falsify the device’s data.

The Special Brigade Against Organized Crime and Intelligence of the PNP, were carrying out an undercover surveillance, that is how they found Josefina Narcisa Apaza Rojas (64), who was traveling through the Andaluz passage in Huancayo and, upon noticing the police presence, tried to escape, however, after being intervened, 21 stolen cell phones were found on her, valued at more than 10 thousand soles, matrix logic cards of different brands and models of cell phones, a notebook with email notes, mobile devices, a device with which cell phones are cloned and their registered information in Osiptel is falsified, and others.
“We do not rule out the possibility that it is an organized criminal gang that steals cell phones. Apparently, the stolen ones in Huancayo are sent to Lima and the ones from there are brought here,” said the head of Organized Crime, Major PNP Nolan Medina.
