Crash between trucks leaves three dead on the Vía Blanca

MIAMI, United States. — Three people lost their lives this Tuesday in a traffic accident that occurred in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque province.

The incident occurred when a passenger truck that covered the route between Matanzas and Havana collided with a tanker truck. Both vehicles circulated on the Vía Blanca, at the height of Puerto Escondido.

A report appeared in social networks indicates that the people who were injured were immediately transferred to the Provincial Hospital of Matanzas “Dr. Faustino Perez.

The Vía Blanca is one of the highways which has registered the most traffic accidents in the west of the country so far this year. Fatalities and injuries have been recorded in most of them.

figures of the National Road Safety Commission indicate that between January and April 2023 the number of deaths from traffic accidents in Cuba amounted to 243. During that period, more than 3,000 traffic accidents were recorded on the island, in which more than 2,300 injuries were also recorded.

The provinces with the most deaths were Cienfuegos, Havana and Holguín, while the most dangerous was Matanzas, which registered an average of one death for every three crashes. The ages with the highest reported victims are 46 to 55 years and 31 to 35 years.

According to the authorities, the high accident rate was marked by the violation of the right of way, failure to control the vehicle, technical defects, speeding and driving under the ingestion of alcoholic beverages.

The trend in 2023 is on track to match the figures for accidents, fatalities and injuries from last year, in which 9,848 accidents were reported, with 700 fatalities, including 68 minors, and 7,689 injured.
