The Senate’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI), which investigates the activities of organized crime, holds the first hearings of the collegiate this Tuesday (18) with testimonies from the director general of the Federal Police (PF), Andrei Rodrigues, and the corporation’s intelligence director, Leandro Almada, starting at 9 am. 
On Wednesday (19), it will be the CPI’s turn to hear from the director of Criminal Intelligence at the National Secretariat of Penal Policies, Antônio Glautter de Azevedo Morais, as well as prosecutor Lincoln Gakiya, who has been investigating the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) since the beginning of the 2000s.
Installed on November 4th following the repercussions of the police operation in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) that killed 121 people, the first working meetings of the CPI on Organized Crime of the Senate take place at a time when the Chamber of Deputies is trying to vote on the replacement of the bill (PL) Anti-Factionwhich faces resistance from the government and opposition.
In an interview with Brazil Agencythe rapporteur of the CPI on Organized Crime in the Senate, senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), explained that the Commission’s objective is to produce a complete diagnosis of the action of factions and militias in Brazil that enables the adoption of more efficient security policies.
“With this diagnosis, we will provide guidance on which solutions work and those that have never worked, although they are repeated from time to time”, commented rapporteur Vieira.
The Commission is chaired by senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES), who promises to work to prevent the CPI from becoming a political-electoral stage without objective contributions to the fight against organized crime in Brazil.
“We have to have the responsibility of providing a response to the population without allowing ourselves to be contaminated by this political party or electoral bias. We have to make this CPI a positive result in defense of what is elementary, which is the public security as a right of all and a duty of the State”, Contarato told Brazil Agency.
