Santo Domingo.- The medical director of the Advanced Medicine and Telemedicine Diagnostic Center (Cedimat), Jorge Marte, assured this Wednesday that Covid-19 left “all kinds of” after-effects in patients who contracted the disease, however, he clarified that although some have an explanation, others are “a mystery” and there are still biases.
“COVID has left all kinds of after-effects. Some have an explanation, because the patients were sick in the lungs and have fibrosis and other lung conditions. Others do not have a clear explanation, what is called long COVID, low COVID, where sometimes there is not even a failure in an organ that you can prove, but the patients complain that “I am not the same after I got COVID”. And to be even more mysterious, sometimes the COVID that they got was very mild, it was not even severe,” explained Marte during his participation in the Weekly Lunch of the Corripio Communication Group.
He added that, four years later, long-term coronavirus remains a challenge in terms of knowledge.

Regarding the increase in cardiovascular pathologies after Covid, he said that although there are some series in which the increase has been reported, it is not clear due to biases. “For example, many chronic diseases, such as coronary disease, which is the basis of heart attacks, or diabetes, patients got worse because they had fewer places to go to get care, because many were closed or because there was a fear of not going out because there was COVID. In other words, COVID introduced some biases in the medical and social-epidemiological sense that are difficult to overcome.”
Regarding the Covid-19 vaccines, he stressed that thanks to their application, the number of deaths that occurred worldwide, which amounted to more than 400 million people, did not increase.
“The idea that the cure was worse than the disease is an absolute fallacy,” said Jorge Marte, explaining that although vaccines also have side effects, he clarified that the coronavirus is more likely than the vaccine to cause these consequences.
“COVID vaccines have side effects. Some of them are cardiac-related, such as inflammation of the heart, the so-called cardiomyopathy, such as blood clots, pulmonary arteries. But without going any further, those complications that caused the undisputed mortality from the vaccine in almost 100% of the patients who died and who received the vaccine, are 10 or 20 times more frequent than those caused by COVID.”
Heart attacks and strokes
The time taken to treat a heart attack is crucial. According to international standards, Dr. Jorge Marte indicated that the ideal time to unclog the artery is one and a half hours.
If the 90 minutes are exceeded, the specialist pointed out that a more traditional approach is used, which implies a greater probability of death.
However, in the case of a cardiovascular accident (CVA), the patient must receive medical attention within 4 and a half hours to unclog the artery.
He stressed that for these cases where time is of the essence, Cedimat has the service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The activity was attended by the vice president of the board of trustees, Marisol Vicens; the general director of Cedimat, Milagros Ureña; the director of Hemodynamics at the Cardiovascular Center of Cedimat, Carlos García Lithgow; and members of the board of trustees, Rafael Vitelio Bisonó, Óscar Villanueva and Víctor Virgilio Méndez.
