The capital of São Paulo begins to apply today (18) the fourth dose of the vaccine against covid-19 in elderly people aged 80 and over. Those who took the third dose at least four months ago will be able to get vaccinated. The estimated target audience is 250,000 people.
The city government informed that immunization will be available at all Basic Health Units (UBSs) and Outpatient Medical Assistance (AMAs)/Integrated UBSs, which are open from 7 am to 7 pm, in addition to megaposts and drive-thrus, from 8 am to 5 pm. In addition to the posts, Primary Care, through the Family Health Strategy (ESF), will immunize the elderly in Long Stay Institutions (ILPIs) and at home for those unable to travel to the units.
Until Thursday (16), the capital had applied 29.029 million doses of vaccine against covid-19, of which 11.67 million were first doses (D1), 10.66 million second and s (D2), 6.34 million additional doses (DAs) and 345.5 million single doses (Dus).
Vaccination coverage of the population over 18 years is 110% for D1, 106% for D2 and 68.7% for ADs. In adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, 971.65 thousand D1 were applied, representing vaccination coverage of 115.1%, and 847.51 thousand D2, equivalent to 100.4% of the target audience. In children aged 5 to 11 years, 894.58 thousand D1 were applied, 82.6% of the expected total, and 376.79 thousand D2, which is equivalent to 34.8% of this portion of the population.
Elderly in ICU
Research carried out in private hospitals in the state of São Paulo showed that in 76% of them the age group of the elderly is more frequent among people hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) intended for care against covid-19. The survey is from the Union of Hospitals, Clinics and Laboratories of the State of São Paulo (SindHosp).
According to the president of SindHosp, doctor Francisco Balestrin, the prevalence of occupancy of ICUsmostly by the elderly, can be explained by the greater number of comorbidities that affect people in this age group and also by the lower immune response to vaccines, characteristic of this age group.
