The city of Rio de Janeiro suspended the application of the second dose of the vaccine against covid-19 in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years for those who received the Pfizer immunizer in the first application.
According to the Municipal Health Department (SMS), the city is short of adult doses from the North American manufacturer and the basic vaccination schedule must be done with homologous vaccines, that is, from the same manufacturer.
Only Pfizer was authorized to be applied to this public until January, when the Ministry of Health included CoronaVac for children aged 6 and over.
According to the city’s vaccination panels, there are still 111,800 young people aged 12 to 19 to complete the basic regimen, with two doses, against covid-19.
For the booster dose in the adult public, the Janssen and AstraZeneca vaccines, available in stock in the city, are being applied.
“SMS-Rio has already asked the Ministry of Health for doses of Pfizer for adults, and is still waiting for the vaccine to arrive”, informs the agency.
Status in the state
The State Department of Health (SES) on Monday (4) requested the Ministry of Health to send 600,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. “The immunizer will serve to complete the vaccination schedule of people aged 12 years or older who have received only the dose of the immunizer”, said the SES.
The Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday (6) that 4.8 million doses would be distributed that week, 1.2 million pediatric, for the application of the second dose in children aged 5 to 11 years.
In the second batch, there are 3.6 million doses intended for the booster in adults. Of this total, 2.2 million are from Janssen, 1.3 million from AstraZeneca and around 50,000 from Pfizer.
According to the Ministry, there are no vaccines pending for the state of Rio de Janeiro.
“The paste has already delivered more than 40 million doses to the state, 16 million of which are for the public over 12 years of age. According to data provided by the state, 13.5 million doses were applied. That is, the state has an estimated balance of more than 2.5 million doses for the public. However, the ministry evaluates the request for more immunizing”, informed the ministry today (8).
