COVID-19: Our grandparents are in danger, let’s take care of them

The extreme care of our grandmothers and grandfathers by their families and relatives —and also by themselves— must be a priority in these days of pandemic, when the current wave of COVID-19 is causing death, fundamentally of people over 70 years of age.

Although the fatality rate in Cuba is among the lowest internationally, almost 80 percent of those who are dying due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus exceed the seventh decade of life, Deputy Minister of Public Health Carilda Peña told journalists Garcia.

The expert also emphasized the self-care and family care of people with comorbidities, especially diabetics, hypertensives, heart patients and kidney patients, as well as citizens with mental disabilities, generally with limitations for self-care and to convey that something may be afflicting.

Dr. Peña García made the observations at this Saturday’s meeting of the temporary Government Group that has been working for two years on the prevention and control of the new coronavirus, and which was headed by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

Through videoconference, the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, led an exchange in which political and government authorities from all the country’s territories participated and in which a series of positive indicators were evidenced, which, however, should not generate trust; lead to think that “the pandemic is over”.

According to the global data presented by the MINSAP and the data territory by territory, the number of positive cases, the number of active cases and the statistics of people in serious or critical condition decrease in the country. 98.5 percent of the total cases reported since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 have recovered.

The tendency to control the disease, to reduce the “bad” indicators, is evident. It is observed “in plain sight” in the drop in the demand for care in consultations for acute respiratory infections (ARI), among others. But “eye”!

Dr. Carilda Peña García was emphatic about the caution that each and every one of us must have these days, both maintaining the established hygienic-sanitary measures —it is not the time to put common sense aside— and paying maximum attention to the symptoms.

Faced with the described symptoms of COVID-19 in its current variants, of which almost all of us have heard or are aware, we must go to the doctor immediately. This does not mean income, but you must always have medical criteria, stressed the deputy minister.

He also warned about the discipline that must be followed with the elderly, who are arriving at those consulted seven or eight days after the first symptoms, which can lead to serious states.

At the meeting of the Temporary Group of the Government for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus, it was reported that MINSAP teams were sent to the province of Ciego de Ávila and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud to accompany local specialists in the epidemiological assistance and clinical management of cases, since the highest number of cases and deaths are being reported in these territories.

In this Saturday’s meeting of the Temporary Working Group, the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party, Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, and the Deputy Prime Ministers Inés María Chapman Waugh, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Alejandro Gil Fernández and Jorge Luis Perdomo Di- Lella, in addition to ministers, ministers and other authorities.
