Covid-19 in Mexico: June 2022 registers a slight increase in deaths from coronavirus in Mexico

During June 2022, the Health Secretary reported 791 deaths due to Covid-19 registered at the national level, so the total official number of deaths so far in the pandemic in Mexico amounted to 325,716 deaths.

During the sixth month of the year, 200 more deaths were recorded than those reported in May (591 deaths), based on data from the Interactive Dashboard on Covid-19 of National Institute of Public Health (INSP) and the daily technical reports of the Ministry of Health.

Despite this increase, the registered number of deaths at the end of June was the second lowest that has been reported in the two years and four months of the coronavirus pandemic in Mexico; this without considering the black figure: deaths not reported by the Ministry of Health and whose causes can be attributed to this disease.

This increase in deaths occurs within the framework of a rebound in Covid-19 infections, which began in the last weeks of May and which extended during June after registering 258,942 cases of the coronavirus, attributed to a greater extent to the subvariants BA.4 Y BA.5 of Omicronaccording to data from the Ministry of Health.

The number of infections accumulated throughout the pandemic, which began in the country at the end of February 2020, already exceeds 6 million cases. As of June 30 this year the Daily Technical Report on the progress of the epidemic reported that the total number of infections by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 amounted to 6 million 34,602.

On Thursday, 24,537 new cases of Covid-19 were reported, the highest daily number of the month.

According to the Health authorities, the distribution by sex in the recently confirmed cases shows a predominance in women (52.4%). The overall median age is 38 years old, according to the technical report.

It is worth remembering last April 25, the Health Secretary decided to stop publishing its daily technical report on cases and deaths of Covid-19, to only do it once a week, after the main indicators of the epidemic maintained a downward trend. However, on June 7, the agency resumed the daily publication of this information due to the increases in infections registered at the end of May. Given this, the contagion figures for April and May have been updated and adjusted.

The Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, detailed last Tuesday, June 28, that Mexico It has been 10 epidemiological weeks with increases in coronavirus infectionshowever, highlighted that the levels of deaths and hospitalizations due to this condition have not registered significant increases.

At the cutoff on Thursday, the Ministry of Health reported that the occupancy of general care beds for patients with Covid-19 stood at 8%, one percentage point more than what was registered the previous day. Meanwhile, beds with ventilators for serious patients register an occupancy of 2 percent.

The official highlighted that the smallest increase registered in deaths and people hospitalized due to the Covid-19 It is due to a greater extent to the progress of the vaccination plan against the coronavirus that began on December 24, 2020 and that currently focuses on the immunization of children from 5 to 11 years of age, a phase that began this Monday, June 27; as well as the application of booster doses for the rest of the population, especially older adults and people with comorbidities.
