Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) – associated with covid-19 – maintained the upward trend already registered in recent weeks in Amazonas and São Paulo and also show a clear upward trend in Ceará and Rio de Janeiro.
This is revealed by information released yesterday (10) in the last Infogripe Bulletin, by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Data from February 26 to March 4 also point to initial signs of an increase in Mato Grosso do Sul and Pará.
The advance of SARS by covid-19 – which generates hospitalizations – is more associated with cases in the adult population. InfoGripe also registers an increase in cases among children and adolescents, but there is no clear viral association, according to the newsletter’s coordinator, Marcelo Gomes.
“In Bahia, in Mato Grosso do Sul, in Paraná, in Santa Catarina and, to a lesser extent, in São Paulo, there is an increase in positive cases for rhinovirus in children up to 11 years old”, said the researcher, in a text released by Agência Fiocruz. of News.

He points out that the new growth scenario reinforces the importance of the vaccination campaign started on February 27 by the Ministry of Health, in which priority groups can now receive bivalent vaccines against covid-19, updated to provide greater protection against the variant Omicron.
Altogether, 18 federative units show an upward trend in SARS cases, however, only in those highlighted by the study can the movement really be considered an expansion. In Amazonas, in addition to covid-19, SARS hospitalizations are also associated with cases of influenza A.
Despite this, the bulletin also informs that in Alagoas, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina there is a growth of cases of SARS concentrated among children and adolescents, which, so far, is not reflected in the adult population.
