“COVID-19 has not disappeared”, MINSAP warns of a rebound

MADRID, Spain.- Given the rebound in confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the island, the Cuban Minister of Public Health (MINSAP), José Ángel Portal Miranda, called to act responsibly: “extreme hygiene and comply with the measures distancing and protection in places where there is an agglomeration of people”.

“COVID-19 has not disappeared,” said Portal Miranda, and asked to “give priority to the use of facemasks, especially by vulnerable people.”

The minister, quoted by the Cuban News Agency (ACN)indicated that recently a new booster dose of “vaccines” began to be applied for pregnant women, for women who are still lactating, and for people over 70 and others who, due to their pathologies or workplaces, could be vulnerable.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health, at the close of January 11, 2023, 143 coronavirus patients were admitted, 52 suspected and 91 confirmed; of the latter, one is in critical condition.

Throughout the past year the incidence of COVID-19 had fallen to almost zero in the country. However, from the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, the health authorities alerted Cubans to an increase in infections.

José Ángel Portal Miranda recently reported that from November to December 2022 the average number of cases with coronavirus per day increased from 3.7 to 19.1.

According to MINSAP, the island is experiencing an outbreak of the variant XBB1 of omicron, which would be entering Cuba through tourism.

This new variant of omicron, which is circulating in 29 countries, has similar characteristics to the previous ones and presents the same behavior.
