Covid-19 CPI members ask MP and MPF to take action in Rio

Members of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) of the Pandemic asked the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) to take action in Rio de Janeiro. Senators Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) and Humberto Costa (PT-PE) met with Attorney General Luciano Mattos and a group of federal attorneys, who received copies of the final report of the CPI, this Thursday afternoon (11).Covid-19 CPI members ask MP and MPF to take action in Rio

Among the issues that are of interest to senators are possible cases of corruption in federal hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, during the pandemic period, with overpricing of supplies and irregular purchases.

“We shared with the Federal Public Ministry in Rio de Janeiro information that was collected during the CPI. It was impossible to delve into investigations in the states. Information related to federal hospitals in Rio will be shared with the MPF. I felt in relation to the members of the MPF a great willingness to deepen this information. I believe it is possible to know who the ‘owner’ of hospitals in Rio de Janeiro is”, said Aziz, who was the president of the CPI, without mentioning who would be this person with influence over the state’s federal hospital network.

The senators were received by the chief prosecutors of the MPF in the 2nd Region (RJES), Artur Gueiros, and of the MPF in Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Pinel. Also present were the regional prosecutor of the Republic Marcia Morgado, coordinator of the Criminal Nucleus of the MPF in the 2nd Region, and the prosecutor of the Republic Eduardo El-Hage, coordinator of the Special Action Group for Combating Organized Crime (Gaeco).

The MPF in the 2nd Region is the second instance unit of the body, responsible for investigating facts mentioned in the report that are linked to people who have jurisdiction by prerogative of function in the Regional Federal Court of the 2nd Region. The MPF in RJ is responsible for investigating facts related to those involved who do not have this prerogative.

The Pandemic CPI investigated actions and possible omissions by the federal government in combating the covid-19 pandemic and, in the end, requested 80 indictments. Among them, President Jair Bolsonaro was charged with nine crimes, ranging from common offenses, provided for in the Penal Code, to crimes of responsibility, pursuant to the Impeachment Law. There is also citation of crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

In addition to Bolsonaro, another 77 people, including the president’s three sons, ministers, former ministers, federal deputies, doctors and businessmen are on the list. There are also two companies: Need Medicines and VTCLog. With that, there are 80 requests for indictments in the report.
