COVID-19 cases have rebounded in Cuba in recent days

OnCubaNews

After several weeks of epidemiological stability, infections of COVID-19 show a rebound in Cuba to exceed one hundred active cases in recent days.

This Sunday the health authorities reported 29 patients detected yesterday, which brought the number of active patients to 138. In addition, another 58 people are suspected of suffering from the disease, in accordance with the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).

The new cases confirm the trend of recent days, when 38 (Friday), 32 (Thursday) and 25 (Wednesday) were detected, after the analysis of more than a thousand daily samples.

However, as reported by the island’s health authorities, despite this slight rise, there have been no more deaths from the infectious disease. For several months now, the official number of deaths from COVID-19 in Cuba throughout the pandemic has remained at 8,530.

In addition, none of those currently hospitalized for the disease is in critical or serious condition, while this Saturday 15 medical discharges were given.

Regarding the most recent cases, 23 were contacts of confirmed cases; one had its source of infection abroad, and in five the origin of the contagion could not be specified.

Of the total number of patients (29), 15 correspond to the female sex and 14 to the male sex, while by age those under 20 years of age, with 17 infections, were the most affected group. The rest corresponded to people from 20 to 39 years old (7), from 40 to 59 years old (2), and from 60 and over (3).

Finally, Havana (8) was the territory with the highest number of patients, followed by Matanzas (5). Artemisa, Mayabeque, Guantánamo and the Isla de la Juventud reported three cases each.

After a rapid surge due to the Omicron variant at the beginning of the year, Cuba has kept COVID-19 under control throughout 2022. The wide immunization coverage with vaccines produced on the island has been essential in this control, which allowed dismantling the restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

However, as also happened in the two previous years and occurs at this time in other parts of the world, December has brought an increase in cases, with the change in temperatures and the festivities for the end of the year.
