The Rodney Alvarez case

Álvarez was arrested on June 17, 2011, in Ciudad Piar, Bolívar state, accused of being the alleged murderer of worker Renny Rojas (28 years old). The victim was fatally shot in the neck during an assembly to elect representatives of an electoral commission that would carry out the elections of the Ferrominera Workers’ Union (Sintraferrominera).

Previously, it had been warned that acts of violence could occur in the activity, but neither the surveillance nor the military presence prevented the clashes between the workers. One of the sides was attached to the government of Hugo Chávez, the other supported the then general secretary of the union, Rubén González.

Initially, the person identified by the witnesses as the alleged perpetrator, Héctor Maicán, at that time finance secretary of Sintraferrominera and member of the Bolivarian Federation of Workers, was arrested and later released by the Second Court of Control. The authorities went for Álvarez eight days after the events.
