The Inter-American Court of Human Rights announced its ruling in the case of the murder of journalist Santiago Leguizamón in 1991 in the border area with Brazil. Our country had agreed with the argument that the case had already prescribed, finally Ricardo Pérez Manrique, president of the Inter-American Court ruled that our country had responsibility for the crime.
“He was responsible for the violation of the rights to judicial protection. The Paraguayan State was found guilty of violating the right to comprehensive protection, which is why the Court orders a series of measures and provides a form of reparation,” said Pérez Manrique.
JUDGMENT
The sentence was as follows; Unanimously, we accept the State’s acknowledgment of responsibility. The State is responsible for the violation of the rights to freedom of thought. The State is responsible for the violation of the rights of judicial guarantees. The State is responsible for the violation of the right to personal integrity. The Court unanimously ordered that the State install the Santiago Leguizamón award for journalists for the next five years. It will also preserve the places of remembrance for Leguizamón. The State will allocate an annual budget for the installation of a protection table for journalists.
