Court extends the detention of Jeanine Áñez for another three months

The Tenth Criminal Investigation Court of La Paz extended for another three months the preventive detention of former president Jeanine Áñezaccused of terrorism, sedition and conspiracy, known as the coup d’état case I. The resolution was issued amid pressure for the former authority to leave prison and be able to assume his defense in freedom.

In the accusation it was mentioned that several investigative actions were yet to be concluded. and another four months in prison were required. The judge extended the period of imprisonment by three.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys argued that The appearance of those involved was not achieved, such as the former Ministers of Defense Fernando López, of the Government Arturo Murillo, the former commanders of the Police Yuri Calderón and from the Armed Forces Williams Kaliman, who are outside the country. It also took into account the argument of the Ministry of Government that so far the orders to seize the cell phones of those involved have not been completed, among whom they also mentioned the former Minister of the Presidency Yerko Núñez.

Although almost a year has passed, neither searches were carried out at the facilities of the departmental electoral tribunalsnor to those of the command in chief of the Armed Forces, in La Paz.

The accusers stressed that The statements of the former president of the Committee for Santa Cruz are yet to be receivedtoday Governor Luis Fernando Camacho and his father, businessman José Luis Camacho.

The Attorney General’s Office took for granted that when Camacho arrived in La Paz, days before the resignation and subsequent departure of Evo Morales from the country, in November 2019, he received military and police protection, and thereby supported that a coup was underway in which Áñez agreed to participate.

For the defense, beyond the lack of investigative actions, the accusers have not been able to substantiate that the crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism were committed. They pointed out that in November 2019 there was a constitutional succession that was subsequently endorsed by the international community, the Legislative Assembly, the Constitutional Court and the MAS itself, which agreed to extend its legislators and all subnational authorities. As it happened on more than 20 occasions, the ruling came out against Áñez.

In the meantime, The pressure for the former president to be transferred to a hospital due to her delicate state of health is growing. His lawyer Jorge Valda indicated that he hopes that this will happen to “save his life and safeguard his integrity.”

Everyone the political leaders of the opposition blamed the government of Luis Arce if there is a fatal outcome.

Añez today entered her fourteenth day on hunger strike.and. His daughter Carolina Ribera had a meeting on Saturday with the rapporteur for the independence of UN judges, Diego García-Sayán.

“He is very interested in the case, asked several questions and realized that there is interference in Boliviathat the situation is serious. Let’s hope that the injustice stops, that the injustice with my mother stops,” Ribera said before consulting the media.

Another instance, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights through the social network Twitter expressed its concern about the case and held the Bolivian State responsible for the life and health of the former president. “The Mission emphasizes that, in the event of an urgent transfer of a person deprived of liberty to a medical center on the instruction of a judge, the State is responsible for preserving public order to guarantee the safety of that person and enforce the judicial provision”, indicates the third message from this office.
