Court admits opposition challenges to Amnesty Law, but denies suspension

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) admitted the appeals filed by opposition legislators against the Amnesty Law promulgated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but denied the suspension requested by the legislators.
Two unconstitutionality actions will be analyzed (135/2024 and its accumulated 139/2024) and Minister Javier Laynez Potisek must present the draft resolution to the full SCJN.
Federal opposition legislators filed unconstitutionality actions against the decree published in the Official Journal of the Federation on the reform of the Amnesty Law, which empowers the President of the Republic to grant amnesty directly, without following the regular procedure.
The aforementioned legislation allows the president to grant this benefit to those who provide verifiable elements that are useful to know the truth of the facts in cases that are relevant to the Mexican State
as well as the persons against whom criminal action has been exercised, they are being prosecuted or are sentenced for any crime
including illegal activities against life or physical integrity, kidnapping, carrying firearms and serious crimes provided for in the second paragraph of article 19 of the Federal Constitution, a measure that is not possible if the ordinary procedure is followed
.
The deputies presented the legal appeals on July 10 and 12 of this year and on September 2. The agreement was published, informing that both actions of unconstitutionality were admitted for processing, but the suspension requested by the legislators was denied.
