MADRID, Spain.- A couple and a third person were arrested for defrauding several residents of Sancti Spíritus with sales of false dollars.
As explained by the local media Escambray Newspaper about the fraudsters’ procedure, contacted potential victims through the Cuban classified ads web portal Revolico.
On this website they advertised the sale of US dollars (USD) in 100 bills to “facilitate transactions”.
“As soon they cajoled Potential victims were lured to a fake Facebook profile, where they cooked up the scam over medium heat. In this way, through the Messenger, the interested parties received guarantees about the legitimacy and origin of the dollars”, the information specifies.
In cases where they did not convince potential buyers from Messenger, they offered a phone number to “thus establish a climate of greater confidence.”
In most cases it was the woman who went to the houses to make the sale. According to the statements of the scammed, she was in a motorcycle, wearing glasses and a doctor’s gown.
“Already there, he did his job so well that none of the customers stopped to look at the numbering of the American bills they had just bought. If they had done so, they would have noticed a macabre resemblance because they all coincided: ME42703207A”, he points out. Escambray Newspaper.
The provider of the counterfeit bills (third party involved) gave the couple between 20,000 and 50,000 pesos, depending on the amount sold.
As indicated by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the three fraudsters are detained with a precautionary measure imposed for the crime of counterfeiting coins, provided for and punished in the current Penal Code.
So far, five victims have been identified: three residents in the municipality of Sancti Spíritus, one in Taguasco, and another in Cabaiguán. With the complaints of four of the victims, it was possible to stop the scammers in the middle of selling to a fifth person.
