Coup plot: Moraes determines resumption of case against Ramagem

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered this Monday (22) the resumption of part of the process of the coup plot against former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem, who is on the run in the United States and is the target of an extradition request to Brazil.Coup plot: Moraes determines resumption of case against Ramagem

The measurement was determined after Ramagem’s mandate revokedlast Friday (19), by the Chamber of Deputies.

Former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Ramagem has already been sentenced to 16 years in prisonin the action of the coup plot, for the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and coup d’état.

Due to the parliamentary mandate, Ramagem had part of the charges suspended. The benefit was applied to crimes of damage qualified by violence and serious threat, against the Union’s property, and with considerable damage to the victim and deterioration of listed property, both related to the coup acts of January 8, 2023.

The suspension is provided for in the Constitution. While he was a deputy, Ramagem did not respond to crimes that occurred after the diploma, which took place in December 2022.

With the loss of his mandate, the former director of Abin will face crimes again and may be sentenced again.

To mark the resumption of the process, Moraes scheduled an instruction hearing for February 5, 2026, when the witnesses listed by the prosecution will be heard, which will be carried out by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), and by the former parliamentarian’s defense.
