Mexicans living abroad, especially in the United States, recognized the intention of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to contemplate in the electoral reform the effective participation of fellow nationals who are outside the country.

The Collective of Mexican Migrant Federations and Organizations (Colefom), made up of more than 106 groups abroad, called on all political actors to join the initiative and expressed their willingness to contribute with proposals and leaders in this process.

“Based on extensive consultations with our organizations and federations, we have built at least 18 strategic points that collect the main demands and suggestions of the Mexican community abroad,” the group said in a statement. He added that in the coming days they will be made public and sent to different political actors.

He celebrated the recent statements of the federal president, expressed on the mornings of January 15 and 16, “in which she reaffirmed her commitment to an inclusive electoral reform that effectively contemplates Mexicans residing abroad.”

In that sense, Colefom urged all political actors to join the will of the Chief Executive “to promote the issue and place at the center of the national debate the need to facilitate the exercise of the vote from abroad, as well as to move towards real mechanisms of political representation, including deputies, senators and other popularly elected positions for the Mexican diaspora, as well as mechanisms of participatory democracy.”

He considered that the position of the head of the federal Executive represents significant progress towards the extension of democratic values beyond national borders and a modern and inclusive opening in political participation.

He also appreciated that public hearings were held in several cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles, Sacramento, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and Washington.

“This dialogue exercise is a clear sign of institutional openness and political will to build a reform with a State vision, recognizing the Mexican diaspora,” they stressed.
