“We are dismayed by the serious and systematic violations and abuses of human rights detailed in the report and by the fact that crimes against humanity could have been committed and may continue to be committed in Nicaragua,” said Claudia Fuentes Julio during her speech. “The report leaves no doubt about the absolute seriousness of the human rights situation in Nicaragua to which it continues to deteriorate. We fear that this trend could lead to an even greater humanitarian crisis, which is why we call on the Nicaraguan government and the international community to act accordingly to protect the human rights of Nicaraguans and achieve accountability, justice and reparation for the victims. », said the representative of Chile.
For his part, the representative of Ecuador said that the South American country “deplores the serious and systematic violations of human rights perpetrated in Nicaragua. The accounts of extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions, torture, harassment, intimidation and arbitrary deprivation of nationality are worrisome.
The countries also denounced in their interventions before the Council that the Ortega regime stripped more than 300 Nicaraguans of their nationality and demanded that international law be respected. They also called on Nicaragua to collaborate with the United Nations agencies and restore all the freedoms violated in the last four years in the country.
Given this, the Attorney General of Nicaragua, Wendy Morales, addressed a few words before the plenary, continuing with the “anti-imperialism” speech replicated by the presidential couple. “They act under the guidelines of imperial powers whose sole purpose is to harm our independence and sovereignty,” said the official.
“We will not allow these malicious reports to continue discrediting and denigrating our authorities, our institutions, or our legal system,” concluded Morales, who, upon leaving the session, avoided making statements regarding the report presented by the UN experts.
