Currently the law says that for federal elections, the vote is received at the moment the polling stations are closed and the electoral packages begin to be sent to the District Councils and the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP) begins. The following Wednesday begins the formal computation.

Joel Reyes Martínez, partner at RC Consultores, points out that a lot of speculation is generated between Sunday and Wednesday, which could be reduced with the “Plan B” proposal, due to the fact that in some cases –as in CDMX– up to date The next one could already have the official results, but it means a challenge for states like Oaxaca, Guerrero or Chiapas.

“Hence the importance of analyzing in practice, of knowing how important the transfer of electoral packages is, that they arrive on time. The system is not bad, its efficiency has been proven in CDMX, but we have to see if with the human resources that they are giving to the INE, that would be feasible, ”he says.

In this, the former electoral adviser Benito Nacif agrees, who recalls that Mexico City has proven experience in counting votes the same night of election day, but it does not imply that this system will work in Oaxaca, in Guerrero and even, in Sonora, because due to its territorial extension, the electoral packages take a long time to arrive.

“If you start to reflect on what you gain by extending the model to the entire country, the truth is that not much…I think that whatever you implement where you do not obtain a profit, it is better to analyze the risks that could happen than not knowing what results will be they will obtain in states with very different geographical conditions”, he indicates.
