Council of the CNDH reproaches Rosario Piedra for accusations against the INE

The members of the Council of the CNDH demanded that Piedra Ibarra adhere, when referring to the general recommendations approved by the Consultative Council, strictly to the approved language, without interpretations regarding its content, respecting the literalness of the recommendation because, otherwise, this tool can become distorted and lose efficiency as a mechanism to guarantee human rights.

Georgina Diédhiou Bello, Tania Espinosa Sánchez, Adalberto Méndez López, Gloria Ramírez, Bernardo Romero Vázquez, Jorge Alejandro Saavedra López and Ángel José Trinidad Zaldívar are the members of the Council who signed the statement.

Over the weekend, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) accused the National Electoral Institute (INE) of leading the “sabotage of the will of the people”, carrying out a “dirty war” and maintaining vices that “for centuries have stained our processes elections”, for which he recommended its reform.

He based his request on recommendation 46/2022, in which he documented acts of anti-democracy and repression that occurred in Mexico, which occurred in the framework of tight electoral control by the ruling party and exclusion of the opposition.

Based on those events of the past that merited the issuance of that recommendation last April, the CNDH issued this Sunday a direct statement against the INE, since it considered that the same situation is being experienced as half a century ago, hence it asked Congress make reforms to the Institute, which he accused of maintaining vices.

In addition, the human rights organization headed by Rosario Piedra opted for the electoral proposal of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – without citing him – who proposed submitting the members of the INE and the Electoral Court to popular election at the polls.

In response to the CNDH, the INE issued a statement in which it stated that it has complied with the recommendations that the Commission made to it last April, including promoting democratic life, strengthening the political party system, and ensuring citizens the exercise of their political-electoral rights.

“In the same way, it is expected that other autonomous bodies will also fully attend to their functions,” the Institute responded.
