Costa Rica urges the international community to be “vigilant” for the presence of Iran in Latin America

Relations with Iran "is harmful and does not benefit Nicaragua at all," say opponents

Following the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to Nicaragua, the Costa Rican Government He pointed out that he was following Iran’s presence in the region “with great attention”, due to the fact that “causes strangeness” the visit of these authorities to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, a zone free of nuclear weapons.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Arnoldo Andrereiterated to the voice of america that the presence of the Iranian authorities in the region is “strange”, especially due to Iran’s non-cooperation with the United Nations and in particular with the international Atomic Energy agency.

Last Thursday, February 2, Iranian Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Nicaragua to sign a cooperation agreement with the Ortega and Murillo administration, through which they seek to establish working meetings on issues that both countries consider of mutual interest.

After the signing of the agreement, the minister of Iran met with the deputies of the National Assembly and with the dictator Daniel Ortega, who in his repetitive speech attacked the United Nations, as well as the international community that questions him for the violations to human rights.

In addition, Ortega also defended that Iran have nuclear weapons. “We are not lovers of atomic bombs… But with what authority do they want to ban Iran if it wants to make atomic bombs?” Ortega asked the Iranian foreign minister.

Faced with this situation, Foreign Minister Arnoldo André assured that the Costa Rican government will remain vigilant in the face of Iran’s presence in the countries of the region.

He stressed that “in an increasingly polarized world, with a conflict that could lead to the use of nuclear weapons, the international community must be vigilant for all members of the United Nations to commit to nuclear non-proliferation.”

Likewise, the Costa Rican foreign minister stressed that the administration of Rodrigo Chaves will raise its voice in favor of nuclear disarmament and disarmament in general.
