Costa Rica urges its nationals to leave Cuba and not travel to the island due to shortages

The Government of Costa Rica urged Costa Ricans this Monday to avoid non-essential trips to Cuba and those who are already on the island to leave there in the face of the fuel, food and electricity crisis that the island is going through.

“Due to the worsening shortage of fuel, electricity and basic products, such as food, water and medicines in Cuba, all Costa Ricans who remain on the island are urged to leave it while commercial flights are available. Likewise, the suspension of non-essential travel to Cuba is recommended,” indicated a statement published by the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry.

The statement also warns that “the possibilities of evacuating Costa Ricans, whether residents or tourists in an emergency, are very limited” and that the Government “does not have the economic or material resources necessary to carry out this type of operations.”

In this way, the Central American country joins many others that have issued similar alerts in recent weeks, such as United KingdomSweden, CanadaArgentina, Ireland, Australia, Spain and USA.

Cuba is going through a serious economic and energy crisis, marked by shortages of basic products, lack of fuel and frequent blackouts, due to the tightening of US sanctions, in addition to internal factors and the accumulated impact of the pandemic.
