Costa Rica receives nuns expelled from Nicaragua by Daniel Ortega

Costa Rica received on Wednesday two nuns from the Dominican de la Anunciata congregation who left Nicaragua after being expelled by the government of President Daniel Ortega.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Tilarán-Liberia, Monsignor Manuel Eugenio Salazar, expressed that he was willing to provide any support required by these nuns, who also have Costa Rican nationality, as well as their families and the rest of the congregation.

“The two religious sisters of the Dominican de la Anunciata congregation, Isabel and Cecilia Blanco Cubillo, expelled from Nicaragua, were received by their sister Violeta Blanco Cubillo together with her husband, Carlos Vargas, after 2 pm today, Wednesday the 12th.” the diocese reported in a statement.

The women were in charge of the López Carazo Foundation Nursing Home, in the city of Rivas, in southern Nicaragua, on the Pacific. However, the Ortega government gave the nuns a period of 72 hours to leave the country, reported the Confidencial outlet directed by the journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro.

Along with the Costa Rican nuns, there was also a Salvadoran woman in charge of the Nursing Home.

The Nicaraguan government has not made statements about the expulsion of the nuns.

The voice of america He asked the expelled missionaries for comment, but they declined to speak about it.

The López Carazo nursing home was founded in 1916, according to local media, and the land where it is built was donated by the family of former President Evaristo Carazo.

Nicaragua is experiencing a political crisis that this April 18 turns 5 years old without a way out in sight.

Ortega has launched a persecution against the Catholic Church, according to human rights organizations, and has expelled the Vatican Envoy in Nicaragua, Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag. In the same way, he keeps an important bishop in jail accused of “issuing false news”, among other crimes.
