Costa Rica kills the Mexican 'Piojo' Herrera

The Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF) fired the Mexican on Thursday Miguel “Piojo” Herrera as a coach, two days after failing in the goal of taking it to the 2026 World Cup. Herrera, 57, could not take Costa Rica to their seventh World Cup, fourth in a row, by finishing third in Group C in the Concacaf qualifying round, in which Panama, Curacao and Haiti won their ticket to the World Cup to be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The first in each of the three qualifying groups qualified for the World Cup. In addition, the two best seconds -Jamaica and Suriname- will play in an intercontinental playoff in March 2026. “Miguel Herrera ceases to be the technical director of the Costa Rican senior team along with his coaching staff as of this Thursday, November 20,” the FCRF reported.

Herrera, who led Mexico in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, was appointed coach of the “tica” team in January, and under his management the Central American representative team recorded seven wins, five draws and three losses. The Federation added that in the coming days it will dedicate itself to analyzing the candidates to choose the technical director who will be in charge of the selection.
