Costa Rica deports 38 Nicaraguans

The General Directorate of Migration and Aliens (DGME) of Costa Rica reported that last week it deported 40 people to their countries of origin, of that total 38 were Nicaraguans, one from El Salvador and another from Honduras.

“Six foreigners served a sentence for having a record for the crime of aggravated robbery, 30 were in irregular immigration status, one foreigner had a record for the crime of infringing the mining law, one served a sentence for the crime of selling drugs, one for attempted homicide and a Salvadoran for links to the Mara Salvatrucha gang,” the immigration authority detailed on its Facebook page.

They add that “these actions are the result of the different police operations that are carried out even in conjunction with other police forces.” In addition, that in the first four months of 2023 it has already deported more than 300 foreigners, most of them from Nicaragua.

Diario Extra, from Costa Rica, reported that as of May 7, 280 Nicaraguans had been deported in the first four months of the year. Said number is greater than the 189 returned to Nicaragua and 13 citizens were expelled.

In the first two weeks of March, 40 Uniques were deported, six of them with criminal records. In the first week of May, another 14 Nicaraguans in irregular migratory status were deported.

2022 marked the record number of refugee applications made by Nicaraguans in Costa Rica with 80,028 cases, a number higher than the 52,929 that were registered in 2021, according to official figures.
