The Government of Costa Rica reported that it delivered a “protest note” to the Nicaraguan authorities for the incursion of armed soldiers from the Nicaraguan Naval Force into its territorial waters, which they classify as a violation of Costa Rican sovereignty.
In a releasethe Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica explained that the situation was raised at a meeting of high-level delegations from both countries, gathered in Peñas Blancas, where “the existing communication mechanisms and the reinforcement of coordination of search and rescue in maritime areas.
“A protest note was also delivered to Nicaragua, due to the incursion of Nicaraguan naval force vessels into Costa Rican territorial waters,” reads the document dated October 17.
Military incursion in Costa Rican waters
The entry of armed Nicaraguan soldiers into the waters of the neighboring country to the south occurred on October 7, in the morning hours. The fact was denounced by the mayor of the Cruz, Alonso Alán Corea, who stated that this action by the Daniel Ortega regime constitutes a “historic act” in the violation of the sovereignty of Costa Rica.
“Yesterday, Friday, October 7, in the morning hours, armed Nicaraguan soldiers entered national waters, specifically Playa Jobo in Punta Descartes, in pursuit of neighboring fishermen from El Jobo. As has been their historical action, without there being a defense of the sovereignty of our territory by the State to date, they persecute and harass our fishermen in Bahía Salinas, which is national territory,” said the mayor.

The mayor classifies this attitude of the Nicaraguan Naval Force as “provocation, it is not only in Bahía Salinas, it is enough to approach a few meters to the border between our countries in Conventillo, for example, and immediately the military take up a defensive position with their rifles, the same thing happens in Liberty».
He added that “entering Playa Jobo is a clear provocation, an offense, a total disrespect for the sovereignty of our country, we will proceed to issue formal complaints, our canton has the videos and the witnesses.”
